1. Mandawuy Yunupingu (1956 - 2013)

Mandawuy Yunupingu was an Australian musician, educator, and civil rights activist. He was born in the remote community of Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in Northern Territory, which is close to Grooteeylandt. Mandawuy Yunupingu was the lead singer and one of the founding members of the highly influential Australian band Yothu Yindi. He played a key role in promoting and preserving Aboriginal culture through his music and activism. In 1992, Yothu Yindi released their iconic song "Treaty" which became a national hit and conveyed an important social and political message about Indigenous rights in Australia.

2. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (1971 - 2017)

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, often referred to as Gurrumul, was an acclaimed Australian musician from the Yolngu community in Northern Territory. Gurrumul was born in Elcho Island, which is located in northeastern Arnhem Land near Grooteeylandt. He was blind from birth and had an extraordinary talent for music. 3. Roy Marika (1925 - 1988)

Marika played a significant role in the landmark Gove land rights case in the late 1960s, fighting for Indigenous land rights and recognition of traditional ownership. He was a prominent spokesperson for the Yolngu people and an advocate for Indigenous rights across Australia. Witiyana Marika is an Australian musician and cultural leader from the Yolngu people. He was born in Yirrkala and grew up in the Grooteeylandt area. Witiyana Marika is a member of the highly acclaimed band, East Journey, which blends traditional music with contemporary elements. He plays the yidaki (didgeridoo) and other traditional instruments, showcasing the richness and depth of Yolngu culture.
